That also reminds me of when I was asking for directions in Venice... The guy I was talking to only spoke Mandarin and Italian, so I opted for Italian :P (I don't really know Mandarin.)

I got a "ching chong!" from a street merchant in Rome. My Roman friend asked me what he said, genuinely. Also, saw a Chinese restaurant right outside the Torre di Pisa area!

The New Italian Cinema at ItaLingua

Thumbnail
February 24, 2012 from 6pm to 8pm
In Italian - Tuition: $35There is a new generation of young directors that use cinema as a way to describe the Italian society of today. Paolo Sorrentino, Marco Tulio Giordana, Matteo Garrone, and Paolo Virzi show through their movies what happens in Italy focusing their eyes on political characters, immigration, youth unemployment and the camorra. This workshop is going to present the new Italian post-neorealism: when movies explain the reality. These are the movies:Il Divo (Paolo…See More

From the grand classics of the 1930s to modern supercars of today, Italian designers have influenced the look of automobiles on a global scale. Sculpture in Motion: Masterpieces of Italian Design will explore the many ways in which Italian coachbuilders and manufacturers have contributed to the evolution of the automobile from a collection of disorganized parts to a single, visually appealing unit. Already well aware of the Italian contribution in the look of clothing, art, and architecture,…See More

Sapevo Che Mi Avrebbe Chiamata!

Today I would like to go over ‘la concordanza dei tempi’ of the indicative mood. I receive questions very often about this, so I think it’s a good idea to review these agreements together.

  • When we can have two actions that happen at the same time, we call this relationship contemporaneità:

So (adesso) che Maria lavora (adesso)in banca. [I know (at the present time) that Maria works (now) in a bank.]

Sapevo (allora) che Maria lavorava (allora) in banca. [I knew (at that time) that Maria worked (then) in a bank.]

  • When we have a dependent action that takes place before

the principal action (it has already taken place), we call this relationship anteriorità:

Sai (adesso) che io ho mangiato (prima di adesso) molto.  [You know (at the present time) that I…

Parole…Parole…Parole

  • “Un attimo, arrivo!” The Italian expression un attimo

corresponds to the English ‘a moment, an instant’:

Faccio in un attimo. (I will be done in a moment.)

Aspetta un attimo! (Wait a second!)

Scusa un attimo… (Excuse me for a moment.)

Preparo il caffè in un attimo. (I’ll prepare the coffee in an instant—It will only take me an instant to prepare coffee.)

  • Sono stufo! This idiomatic expression corresponds to the English ‘I am fed up; I’m sick and tired’:

Sono stufa!

Sono stufo di te!

Sono stufa di aspettare. (With an infinitive we use the preposition di after sono stufo/a.)

  • Non fa niente corresponds to the English ‘it’s nothing; don’t worry; it doesn’t matter’:

Ho lasciato il libro a casa di Maria. Non fa niente,…
